The Future of Security in Europe Cannot Be Addressed Without Europe

Rules out deployment of troops from EU countries to Ukraine in the event of a peace agreement, and says Albares shares the same view

The spokesperson for Sumar, Ernest Urtasun, has described as “grave” that a summit between Russia and the United States on Ukraine’s future would be held in the United Arab Emirates, and he stressed that this issue cannot be addressed “without Europe.”

He has also rejected a hypothetical deployment of European troops to Ukraine as a security guarantee in the event of a peace agreement, noting that Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares himself has dismissed that scenario.

At a press conference on Monday, Urtasun rejected the US-Russia summit, emphasizing that “any discussion on resolving the Ukrainian conflict must be with the Ukrainians at the table, and any discussion regarding Europe’s peace and security must be with Europe at the table.”

The Culture Minister, who is also in charge of the Culture portfolio, explained that time has proven them right about the “error” of Europeans subordinating defense and security policy to the United States and NATO. Therefore, he urged designing an autonomous defense strategy within the EU.
